Our families tramped into Children’s Hospital in September 2003 for Riley’s first cochlear implant surgery. My parents, brother and sister-in-law, and Ryan’s parents all made the trip with us. Aunts and uncles and people from our church came, too. As you can see from the video Riley didn’t have a care in the world. She pulled her little suitcase through the hall and promptly dropped it as soon as she saw the play equipment in the One-Day Surgery center. While I filled out paperwork, she slid, climbed and crawled through tunnels with other kids. It seemed to take forever before they called us back to a room, then forever again before they took her back and forever again before the surgery was finished. (Voiceover by my mom.)
All was well, and we went home the next day. Less than a month later, she heard our voices for the first time.

Girl, the whole family turned out. And folks from our church who I never expected to see there. It made things much easier to know people were praying for us, and hanging out with us.
